2nd Movement: Line Dance

Harbison writes about this movement: "The first dancers finish exhausted. Then, as if on cue, the whole crowd gets into a line of people of all ages, nine to ninety. They all know the steps, which change with the phrases."

The basic rhythm changes very slightly, one could call it "variations on a rhythm". See if you can trace these changes and how they effect the "grove" of this piece.

Listen for the dynamic changes. When is the saxophone more in the background, accompanying the piano, and when is it the other way around? Space is very important here - at the end it seems almost as if the performers are walking off the stage...
