The New Memphis Blues & Mahler in Blue Light
The blues stand as one of the country's longest-running musical traditions, and this year students in Memphis, Tennessee have been making their own contributions through the Memphis Kids 'N Blues project. At Overton High School, a band of eight student musicians have written and recorded their own blues compositions, soon to be released as a compact disc. Students from Memphis elementary schools have contributed the lyrics for the songs--based on the different stages of blues history from the Delta and Memphis Blues to the Chicago and rock idioms. On Friday, May 2 at 10am Eastern, via CU-SeeMe, these student musicians will present a fifteen--minute video of a recent performance followed by a live videoconference about their musical experience. Blues Bearings The Memphis Kids 'N Blues project is a joint undertaking
of the Memphis City Schools and

Music performance, appreciation, and curriculum merged on the Internet as BBN's National School Network joined WGBH, World-Wide Concurrent Premieres, and New England Conservatory to present a live performance of "Mahler in Blue Light," a trio for piano, cello, and alto saxophone by Larry Thomas Bell on Thursday, March 13 at 1:00 PM EST. The performance was carried live from WGBH-FM (89.7) via RealAudio on AudioNet around the country and the world. A live conversation online with the composer and performers followed for schools from around the United States, Korea, and Germany. This event was part of NSN's MOTET (Music Online Telecommunications Environment for Teaching) Project and includes an online music appreciation curriculum. Supported by White Pine Software, CU-SeeMe and ichat.
